6 Foods That Help You Say Goodbye to Bad Breath

Jan 20, 2015

The bad news is that everyone suffers from the bane of bad breath once in a while. The good news is that everyone has the power to control it–and that power comes in the form of food.

Halitosis, or offensive-smelling breath, is caused by bacteria that live under and on your tongue, on your teeth, and in all corners of your kisser. When someone’s breath smells foul, it’s highly likely that bacteria are basking in their mouth.

Bad breath doesn’t smell or look pretty–if you’ve ever noticed a thin layer of a white substance on your tongue, you’ve seen bad breath. But at least you can treat it by brushing, flossing and eating foods that fight it.That’s right: You can eat your way to healthy, fresh breath. Here’s how:

    1. Drink Green Tea. Green tea is more than delicious; it’s also a bacteria-battling force. Drinking it often reduces the likelihood of bacteria.

    2. Eat Yogurt. Bacteria don’t like yogurt, which is why eating a daily dose of yogurt will create unfavorable conditions for bacteria inside your mouth.

    3. Chew Herbs. If you notice that your breath is a little bit stinky, you can pop some coriander, spearmint, tarragon, eucalyptus, or rosemary in your mouth and, presto, that foul smell will be replaced by the pleasing aroma of fresh herbs.

    4. Devour Vitamin D. If there is a vitamin in the world that halitosis doesn’t like, it’s Vitamin D. If you really want to protect yourself from bad breath, eat foods that are loaded with it, including yogurt, cheese and milk products.

    5. Bite Berries and citrus fruits. In addition to Vitamin D, bad breath doesn’t like vitamin C. So make sure to load up on berries and citrus fruits.

    6. Get Crunchy. Crunchy, fiber-rich foods help remove bacteria-laden plaque from your teeth. So crunch away!
