Tooth Extraction: Post Care Tips

Tooth Extraction: Post Care Tips

Jul 06, 2016

After a tooth extraction, it is imperative to take proper care of your mouth. Your dentist will provide instructions on post-extraction care to ensure that you heal and recover properly. If you do not follow the proper oral care, serious problems can occur. Here is a look at some post-extraction care tips that you need to follow:

  • Avoid cleaning the teeth next to the healing area for the rest of the day. However, you should thoroughly brush and floss other teeth. Gently rinse your mouth after doing so.
  • Do not rinse the affected area vigorously for 24 hours after getting your tooth extracted. This can create suction in the mouth, which in turn could dislodge the clot. This will slow down the healing process.
  • After getting your tooth extracted, eat soft, nutritious foods and drink plenty of fluids. Make sure that you do not drink alcoholic beverages. Also, make sure that you do not drink anything with a straw.
  • Do not engage in strenuous activity or exercise for 24 hours after the extraction. This will help reduce bleeding and, in turn, form the blood clot.
  • Do not consume hot drinks or food until the anesthetic wears off. Doing so may burn or scald your mouth, as you cannot feel pain in your mouth properly at this point.

Taking care of your mouth after a tooth extraction is important and the good news is that it is not hard to do. With a few simple tips, you can make sure that you help the healing process and prevent any potential problems.
